T-shirt fundraiser for heartworm positive Jacks

Treating heartworm positive dogs costs lots of money and takes a long time. So we’re asking for your help once again! Heartworms in dogs is a very treatable disease, and can be prevented from even happening by a monthly heartworm pill. Two very good and factual articles can be read at the Heartworm Society (yes there is such a thing) and at Pets WebMD, a very informative site.

Treated, adopted

Often many dogs who come to Jacks Galore have not had the advantage of being treated year round to prevent this disease, so they come up heartworm positive when we do their blood work after they’ve come to our rescue. If a dog is not treated once it is heartworm positive the chance of it dying is very high, so we make the extra effort to make sure the dog will lead a long and healthy life in a new home.

The treatment varies from vet to vet, but any dog that comes to us is here for four months, sometimes five, before they can go to a forever home. This is not only a big strain for our vet expenses, but the dog spends time here taking up space that prevents others from joining the dogs in need. It is also tough for the jack to be in “detention” for so long, since during treatment its activity level must be extremely low to keep the heart rate at a low level and out of the danger zone.

Since February, Jacks Galore has been treating five Jacks who tested heartworm positive. Lucca was the first and after five months has gone to her forever home. Freya and Rocket were next and are already in their end stages of treatment. Drew then joined the crew in June and will start her treatments shortly. And finally little Bella, currently with one of our fosters, will be arriving sometime in July and will continue her scheduled treatment.

We are asking for your help to cover the expenses of their treatments, and to realize that these extraordinary costs strain our already limited resources.  But we will not turn away or give up on a dog that has something as treatable as heartworms. So we ask you to join us in this effort for these five JG Jacks and purchase one of our T-shirts so we can reach our goal to help these dogs undergo their heartworm treatment.

Please go to our fundraising page where you can read all about the T-shirts available to order, not only for your family, but perhaps your friends as well! And spread the word because this is going to be a long-distance race to meet our goals. We thank you in advance for your support and your effort to help fund our heartworm treatment costs.
